Because
the sedan delivery was more car-like than a truck-based panel truck,
it made a more refined statement for businesses. It carved out its own
special niche with users and projected an elegant image to customers.
For
the business owner that needed both a personal passenger vehicle and
a commercial vehicle, this was just the ticket.
Today, the 1940 Ford Sedan Deliveries are among the rarest of all Fords.
Only 4,040 were originally built. Compare that to other models Ford
produced in 1940 that ranged as high as 80,000 or more built.
And not many survived. The reason for the poor survival rate is simple:
they were built and sold as a “work” vehicle and that is
the way they were treated. For the most part, they were literally driven
to death. The few that survive today are highly prized.
Needless to say this 1940 Deluxe “Fat Fendered Ford” is
sought after by all types of car enthusiasts.
A
Second Life
We found her in southern Florida during the summer of 2005. Bought and
paid for the car was ours. She sat outside on the gulf coast waiting
for a trucker to haul her to her new home in California. Three weeks
late, the trucker picked her up and headed west. The following week
Hurricane Katrina directly crossed over and flooded the town.
Two Years Later
She is happy
to be in California, no hurricanes or earth quakes, yet. After two years
of welding, sanding, painting, mechanical work and new leather bucket
seats she is road ready and has been on the go. We have driven her across
most of California, Nevada and Arizona. We display her at many events
where we sell our SkyHawk Binoculars and of course we take her to car
shows.
Nuts and Bolts
The 1940
is powered by a new 330HP 350 crate engine with a 350 transmission.
She has a Mustang II independent front suspension package with power
rack and pinion steering. The rearend is a Ford 9 inch.
